Renewals

Renewal of registration must be completed by December 31 of each year in accordance with College bylaws.

Renewal information and instructions are sent to registrants by mid-November and the forms are to be completed entirely online on the Alinity platform. Payment may be made within the platform (online) by credit card. Online payments through banks and cheques/ money orders are no longer accepted.

Registrants must ensure the College has a valid email address for them at all times. The email address must not be shared with any other registrant of the College.

As part of the renewal process, registrants are asked to:

  • Confirm completion of their continuing competency requirements.
  • Confirm the appointment of their professional executor. If your existing professional executor will no longer be registered with the College in the following year, please ensure you have identified a new one.
  • Provide details about their professional liability insurance coverage.

Non-Practising Registration Class to be Discontinued in 2026

Why?

The CHCPBC Bylaws that have been drafted to comply with the Health Professions and Occupations Act (HPOA) and will come into effect on April 1, 2026 remove the Non-Practising registration class. CHCPBC has just under 400 registrants in this class across eight of the nine professions we regulate.

This change is not required by the HPOA, but the Non-Practising class no longer serves its intended purpose. For many colleges this class allowed registrants to stay in touch with their college while they were temporarily away from practice: they could receive newsletters, which were sent by mail in those days, and other communications. The pathway back to full registration may also have been simpler in those days. Newsletters, and much more information, are now available on the College website. For many years, the pathway to return to full registration from Non-Practising has been virtually the same as returning from “Former” (cancelled). In addition, removing the Non-Practising registration class provides a clearer message to the public that an individual is either licensed to practice or they are not.

When?

The class will be discontinued when the HPOA comes into effect on April 1, 2026. Because this coincides with the first day of the new registration year, Non-Practising registrants will not be able to renew as non-practising licensees during renewal in February/March 2026.

What are my options?

If you are currently a Non-Practising registrant, you have 3 options for each registration period:

Present – December 31, 2025

Option 1: Renew as Non-Practising for January 1, 2026, then look at your options for January to March 2026.

Option 2: Cancel your registration during renewal for January 1, 2026. You may return to practice in BC at a later date by meeting the requirements in place at that time. Please refer to the draft HPOA Bylaws for Licensure, section 6-31 (PDF).

Option 3: Apply for reinstatement to full registration until December 31, 2025.

Steps and requirements to apply for reinstatement to full registration

  • Submit an Application for Reinstatement (PDF) form to registration@chcpbc.org.
  • Request a Verification of Licensure form(s) (PDF) from each regulatory or licensing authority in every jurisdiction where you are or were, at any time, registered or licensed for the practice of psychology or another health profession. Direct them to email the form directly to registration@chcpbc.org.
  • Ensure your criminal record check is valid.
  • Complete your Declaration of Professional Executor (PDF).
  • Provide proof of professional liability insurance.
  • If you were Non-Practising for medical reasons, a letter attesting to your readiness to resume the practice of psychology must be submitted by your physician directly to registration@chcpbc.org.
  • Depending on the length of time since you were in active practice and particular circumstances in your case, you may be asked to submit additional evidence regarding fitness to practice and any other information as may be required in order to satisfy the College that you continue to meet the criteria specified in Schedule 7, Table 3 or 4 for core competencies and foundational knowledge in psychology, and have maintained current knowledge, skills and abilities that are substantially equivalent to the standards of academic technical achievement, and the competencies or other qualifications required for initial applicants for registration.

Timeline for Option 3

  • CHCPBC staff will review your documents and confirm whether additional evidence is required within 2 weeks.
  • Registration Committee Psychology Panel must review your application. Please enquire about upcoming meetings to ensure you submit documents by the deadline.
  • If approved for reinstatement to full registration with an effective date before January 1, 2026, you will need to renew as full by no later than December 31, 2025.

Costs for Option 3

  • $1,035 – for reinstatements effective between now and December 31, 2025 (this fee is not pro rated in the case of reinstatement)
  • $345 – prorated annual fee to renew a full license for January 1, 2026 to March 31, 2026.

January 1, 2026 – March 31, 2026  (if you renewed as Non-Practising for January 1, 2026)

Option 1: Do nothing, and your registration will expire automatically on April 1, 2026. You may return to practice in BC at a later date by meeting the requirements in place at that time. Please refer to the draft HPOA Bylaws for Licensure, section 6-31 (PDF).

Criminal Record Check

The Criminal Records Review Program (CRRP) is currently experiencing service disruptions because of the B.C. General Employees’ Union (BCGEU) strike. This is expected to affect processing times and operational capacity. To minimize delays, the CRRP is encouraging criminal record check applicants to use the online submission process with their BC Services Card whenever possible.

Please also note:

  • Applications that require fingerprinting or adjudication (due to a relevant or specified offence) will be particularly affected by these disruptions
  • CRRP phone lines and emails are not currently being monitored; messages left during the strike will not receive a response.

Under the Criminal Records Review Act (CRRA), CHCPBC is required to ensure that each registrant completes a criminal records review conducted by the CRRP.  The College will contact registrants when their criminal records checks are due to expire and will prompt them to renew. Information about this requirement can be found at the provincial government Criminal Record Checks webpage.

For most registrants, this can be completed online. If you have received notice that you are due for a five-year re-check, review the walk-through guide.

The College does not accept shared results of a criminal record check previously completely with the Criminal Records Review Program for another organization.

Business Names

The College of Health and Care Professionals of British Columbia does not regulate psychology corporations under Part 4 of the Health Professions Act, as the government has not enacted a regulation for the profession of psychology under s. 41. However, the College does specify requirements for naming psychology companies when the company name contains a title restricted under the Psychologists Regulation.

The College recommends that registrants carefully review Code section 10.19 “Use of restricted title in company or business name” prior to submitting a request for approval of a company name. Registrants should also wait until they receive consent from the College to use the restricted title prior to preparing a website or other advertising materials that will include the company name.

In order to receive the College’s consent to use a reserved title in a business name, please complete and mail or fax the form below to the College:
