For Hearing Instrument Dispensing Applicants
Canadian-Educated Hearing Instrument Dispensing Graduates Applying for HIP
This section outlines the licensure process and requirements for a Canadian-educated applicant seeking licensure as a hearing instrument practitioner (HIP) in British Columbia who completed an approved educational program within the three years immediately preceding their application.
A Canadian-educated applicant seeking licensure as a HIP in British Columbia must first apply for a Provisional licence.
HIP licensees in the Provisional class:
- May hold their Provisional status for up to one year, during which they may attempt the entry-to-practice examinations up to two times.
- Must practise under the supervision of a HIP who holds a Full licence and has been approved by CHCPBC. For details on the level of supervision required during and after completion of their practicum, see Schedule 7 of the CHCPBC Bylaws.
- Must use the word “provisional” in conjunction with their use of an Exclusive Title.
- May not practise under the supervision of more than two supervisors.
Important: Effective December 15, 2022, the College no longer accepts applications for HIP Intern status. An applicant seeking to become a HIP in BC must first apply for and be granted Provisional licensure. HIP Intern applications received prior to December 15, 2022, will not be required to convert to HIP (Provisional) licensure. Current HIP Interns may complete their HIP licensing requirements (supervised practicum, written and practical examinations) as HIP Interns.
A graduate of a recognized Canadian hearing instrument dispensing program, as outlined in the College bylaws, may apply for Provisional licensure as a HIP by having the information and documents listed below ready, and completing and submitting the application form (PDF) to licensure@chcpbc.org.
1. Official transcripts
After your credential has been awarded, arrange to have your hearing instrument dispensing program’s official transcripts sent directly from the institution to CHCPBC, either by email to licensure@chcpbc.org or by mail to CHCPBC.

Please note that if you fail to meet the requirements for licensure within 90 days of submitting your application, your application will expire, and you will need to submit a new application should you wish to continue to pursue licensure with CHCPBC.
Canadian-Educated Audiology Graduates Applying For HIP
Audiology and hearing instrument dispensing are regulated as separate professions in British Columbia. Individuals wishing to practise in both professions must hold separate licences.
This page outlines the licensure process and requirements for Canadian-educated Audiology applicants seeking licensure as a Hearing Instrument Practitioner (HIP) in British Columbia.
Who Can Apply
You may be eligible to apply for licensure as a HIP under the CHCPBC Bylaws, effective April 1, 2026, if you:
- completed a recognized Canadian program in Audiology within three years immediately preceding your application; and
- completed education and clinical training that meets or exceeds the requirements set out in Schedule 8 of the CHCPBC Bylaws.
Classes of Licensure
Canadian-educated audiology graduates seeking licensure as a HIP in British Columbia must first apply for a Provisional licence.
A Provisional licensee may apply for a Full Licence after completing the practical training program under supervision (unless exempted by the Licence Committee), successfully completing the required entry-to-practice examinations, and meeting all other applicable licensure requirements.
Provisional Licensees:
- May hold their provisional status for up to one year, during which they may attempt the entry-to-practice examinations up to two times.
- Must practise under the supervision of a HIP who holds a Full Licence and has been approved by CHCPBC. For details on the level of supervision required during and after completion of their practicum, see schedule 7 of the CHCPBC Bylaws.
- Must use the word “provisional” in conjunction with their use of an Exclusive Title.
- May not practise under the supervision of more than two supervisors.
Entry-to-practice examinations
Successful completion of the two approved entry-to-practice examinations for HID is required for Full Licensure.
Please refer to the Entry-to-Practice Examination page for additional information regarding approved examinations, eligibility, and examination requirements.
Getting Started
The College thoroughly reviews every application for licensure to determine if applicants meet the College’s licensure requirements.
Step 1: Equivalency Assessment
At this stage, the College assesses whether your education, including academic coursework and clinical training, is substantially equivalent to the HID entry-to-practice requirements set out in Schedule 8 and section 6.27(b) of the CHCPBC Bylaws.
The Licence Committee may request additional documentation to assess your knowledge, skills, abilities, and judgment under section 6.30 of the CHCPBC Bylaws.
The Licence Committee will also consider whether you may be eligible for an exemption from the 660-hour practical training program required for Provisional HIP licensees. Exemptions are granted on a case-by-case basis, depending on the level of relevant clinical learning and/or work experience evident in your application.
To begin the assessment process, you are required to:
Submit an online application through your CHCPBC Portal;
- Pay the Application Fee of $380 in accordance with the CHCPBC Fee Schedule; and
- Submit all required supporting documentation by email to licensure@chcpbc.org or directly from the issuing organization, unless otherwise directed by the College.
- Official transcripts (must be sent directly to CHCPBC by your educational institution)
- Academic coursework requirements form
- Summary of Clinical Practicum Hours form (must be completed, signed, and sent directly to CHCPBC by your educational institution)
- Professional Practice Experience (f applicable)
Once the application fee and required supporting documentation have been received, your education, clinical training, and/or professional practice experience will be reviewed by the Licence Committee.
Estimated timeline: Approximately 6–8 weeks after all required documentation and fees have been received.
Step 2: Applying for Provisional Licensure
If your equivalency assessment is complete and the Licence Committee determines that you have demonstrated substantial equivalency to the entry-to-practice requirements in British Columbia, you may be eligible to apply for licensure as a Provisional HIP with CHCPBC and will be invited to submit remaining documentation required for licensure, including but not limited to:
- A completed Supervision Agreement for Provisional Licensees (PDF) form
- verification of registration/licensure from other regulators (if applicable)
- criminal record check outside of Canada (if applicable)
- professional liability insurance documentation
Estimated timeline: Approximately 2–3 weeks after all required documentation and fees have been received.
Step 3: Become Licensed as a Provisional HIP
Once all licensure requirements have been met, you will be invited to pay the applicable licence fee outlined in the CHCPBC Fee Schedule through your CHCPBC Portal.
Upon receipt of the licence fee, CHCPBC will issue an approval email confirming your licensure status.
Processing Timeline
The average processing time is approximately 3–6 months. Processing timelines may vary depending on the completeness and complexity of the application, whether additional information or documentation is required, and the timing of Licence Committee reviews.
Licence Committee panels typically meet bi-monthly or quarterly. During the equivalency assessment process, applicants will be advised of upcoming panel meeting dates and any deadlines for submitting additional information in support of their equivalency assessment.

Entry-to-Practice Examinations
As specified in the College Bylaws, all required entry-to-practice examinations must be approved by the College’s Licence Committee. Exams for Hearing Instrument Dispensing approved by the Committee and available for applicants to take include the following:
- ILE Written Exam and
- CHCPBC HID Practical Exam
Applicants to become hearing instrument practitioners (HIPs) must pass both exams, including audiology graduates applying to become dually licensed audiologist–HIPs.
All applicants for licensure must take entry-to-practice exams, except those applying for Full licensure through labour mobility and those applying for Temporary licensure.
ILE Written Exam
The International Licensing Examination (ILE), a written examination administered by the International Hearing Society (IHS), is one of the two examinations required for licensure as a HIP with CHCPBC. If you have already passed the ILE Written Exam, please advise the College at the time of applying. You will need to have IHS provide proof of this directly to CHCPBC.
Otherwise, once approved as a Provisional HIP, you are eligible to sit for the ILE Written Exam. You must register for your first attempt within six months of completing your Provisional HIP practicum (660 hours of supervised clinical practice). Provisional licensees who have satisfied the practicum requirement prior to obtaining Provisional licensure should register for their first ILE Written Exam attempt within six months of being granted Provisional licensure.
CHCPBC provides your details to IHS — they will contact you directly to provide instructions about your examination booking, including payment for the examination. ILE Written Exam results are sent directly to the College after at least 10 business days, and CHCPBC will provide you with notice of your results shortly thereafter. For more information about the ILE Written Exam, visit the IHS website.
Testing candidates can request “domain-level performance results” from a previous exam attempt. This includes the percentage score the test-taker achieved in each of the five examination domains (topic areas). The information can assist unsuccessful testing candidates in preparing for another exam attempt. Candidates may request this information directly from IHS by filling out an online request form.
HID Practical Exam
The HID Practical Examination is the second required entry-to-practice examination that Provisional HIP licensees must pass to become Full licensees. This examination is administered by CHCPBC twice a year, during the spring and fall, at Wavefront Centre for Communication Accessibility (Head Office). Address: 2005 Quebec Street, Vancouver, BC, V5T 2Z6.
