Message from the Registrar and CEO
This week marks the one-year anniversary of the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC. This has been a whirlwind year for all of us at CHCPBC, but we did it. Thank you for your patience, feedback and contributions over the first year.
Bringing together seven regulatory colleges to create a single multi-profession regulator was a complex exercise that relied on the expertise and engagement of many. It is said that even good change is hard, and that is a fair statement here.
It is also exciting. In this new college, we get to take the best of our collective wisdom, let go of what no longer serves us, and push forward to embrace new ways of thinking and working to better serve the public.
I hope you are seeing that already, including in our announcement earlier this week to pause the requirement for registrants to report legacy Quality Assurance Program activities. This will allow us the space to develop a new program that is unified across the nine professions we regulate and will align with the requirements for Quality Assurance in the Health Professions and Occupations Act.
Gift of learning
As part of the celebration of CHCPBC’s one-year anniversary, all registrants are invited to attend a virtual presentation next month to be led by Dr. Zubin Austin, a highly regarded speaker who studies the professional and personal development of the health workforce. Dr. Austin has published over 250 peer-reviewed manuscripts, authored five textbooks and been named Professor of the Year by his students on 20 occasions.
Presenter: Dr. Zubin Austin
Date: Thursday, July 24
Time: 12:00 – 1:15 p.m. (includes time for your questions)
Cost: free
Dr. Austin will address:
- Building trust and confidence between regulators and registrants, between health providers and their patients/clients, and between the College and the public
- Building trust and confidence in an age of social media/misinformation
- Views and perspectives on multi-profession regulators
We will send the invitation with registration information soon. If you are unable to join us live, you can access the recording later.
Full Practice Support team in place
One of the main ways we support registrants is through the Practice Support service. Earlier this spring we filled the last vacancy on the Practice Support team, which means there are now professional practice advisors in place for each of the nine professions CHCPBC regulates.
You can reach our practice advisors any time at practicesupport@chcpbc.org.
And beginning next month, the practice advisors will launch a new resource to assist registrants to understand and apply regulatory requirements for practice.
Year two and beyond
Much of the foundational work in CHCPBC’s first year was necessarily internal, as leadership and staff aligned our operations. But I recognize that you, our registrants, were also affected by the transition to CHCPBC. Whether you are a long-time health professional in this province or are new to practice, I appreciate that you took the time to become familiar with CHCPBC – all while continuing to deliver health care services to your patients and clients.
It remains our goal to be accessible to registrants however you wish to engage with us, whether on email, through our Practice Support team, by attending a webinar, being part of a focus group, or simply calling us when you need assistance. We have hosted or attended numerous virtual and in person events over the past year, and have developed an open and respectful relationship with the professional associations to ensure we can deliver on our respective mandates.
Thank you for being part of our regulatory community. We intend to support you to deliver safe and ethical care for many years to come.
