It is with deep sadness that we reflect on the passing of Siem Te’ta-in, Shane Pointe, Coast Salish Knowledge Keeper.
Many of us first knew him as Sulksun, walking alongside the legacy colleges and CHCPBC after amalgamation—guiding us along the path to reconciliation and holding us accountable to our commitments to eradicate Indigenous-specific racism and improve the health and safety of Indigenous peoples in what is now commonly called British Columbia.
Over the years, Siem Te’ta-in conducted many ceremonies grounded in Coast Salish protocols for health regulators. His knowledge of Coast Salish protocols and laws and the importance of relational accountability informed a major shift in regulatory governance. His presence is also woven into the fabric of our organization, as he was influential in both the colour and design of our brand.
His gifts to us reach far beyond the moments he spent with us. Siem Te’ta-in shared profound teachings, including Nutsamaht (“we are one”)—a reminder of what it means to work together as a unified, multi-disciplinary body in service of all people in BC. It is our honour and responsibility to carry his teachings forward.
Siem Te’ta-in brought warmth and joy into every room he entered. His approach to reconciliation was rooted in kindness and growth, and he was patient in the building of all relationships. He generously shared his knowledge and met everyone where they were at.
We offer our deepest condolences to the Snuneymuxw and Musqueam Nations. We are holding his family, communities, and all those whose lives he touched in our hearts. He will be deeply missed.
