Message From the Registrar
We were delighted to invite licensees, board and committee members, professional associations, and staff to a special event that featured Elaine Alec, who is an Indigenous author, entrepreneur, and storyteller.
The Cultivating Safe Spaces framework that was the basis of Elaine’s presentation incorporates the creation stories and knowledge of her Syilx elders and knowledge keepers. Elaine explained that there are four necessary conditions for cultivating safe spaces. She asked us to consider what we, as individuals, need to feel belonging, connected, and safe within ourselves, without relying on others, and without avoiding discomfort or silencing those who don’t agree with us.
Some of Elaine’s teachings that especially resonated with me were the importance of self-care and slowing down, that uncertainty and discomfort are required to make change, and that being aware of how we respond during those times will contribute to good decision-making.
Thank you to Elaine for her teachings, and to all who attended live or watched the recording. It was a thoughtful and generous presentation, and Elaine gave us many gifts to take away and reflect on.
I will leave you with just a few of Elaine’s teachings, and I highly encourage you to listen to the full presentation.
- “Humans are allowed to not have an answer, no matter what your title is. Because nobody – our elders would just laugh – nobody knows everything … that is why we have each other.”
- “Do not expect to change a system with comfort. Prepare yourself and build your adaptive capacity to be uncomfortable, because it’s worth it.”
- [To the health care professionals in the audience:] “I appreciate each and every one of you for everything you’re doing. You do not have to do it, but you’re there, and there are people who really, really, really value you, and I hope you know that on your hardest days.”
Licensee survey
The College wants to build our understanding of licensee perceptions, experiences, and preferences so we can incorporate the learnings into our operational planning, and to inform our communications and engagement activities.
We have partnered with Pivotal Research to develop a survey to collect baseline data about a broad range of topics, such as CHCPBC’s role and effectiveness, communications preferences, and areas of uncertainty or disconnect that need further attention.
In September, all licensees will receive an invitation to complete the survey, which we anticipate will take only 10-12 minutes to complete. The information you provide will be incredibly valuable in informing how we interact with and support licensees in future.
