Provisional licensees for all nine professions are now subject to the same terms and conditions. The licence is granted to enable practice while waiting to complete the entry-to-practice exam.
- Licensees are permitted to practise but only under the supervision of a Full licensee in the same profession who has been approved by the College.
- Licensees are required to be registered for the next available exam when they apply.
- If registration for the exam is not available when they apply for a Provisional licence, then they are expected to register for, or complete, the examination within a couple of months of becoming licensed.
Licensees must notify the College within 7 days if they postpone or cancel the exam, or if they are no longer practising under the supervision approved by the College.
The licence is granted for a maximum of 1 year, but it may expire or be cancelled sooner in the scenarios above.
The licence will expire 14 days after a second exam failure.
Questions and answers about Provisional licensure
What if a licensee is not ready to complete the next available exam?
The Provisional licence is not intended to be a learning period for someone who has not yet demonstrated entry-to-practice competence. It is intended to enable practice while waiting for an exam that may only be available at certain times of the year.
Can I have more than one supervisor?
A provisional licensee may have up to two supervisors.
Can I work at more than one place?
Yes, but you may still only have a maximum of two supervisors.
What if I’ve been offered a job at a place where there is nobody else in the same profession as me?
The College will consider supervision arrangements proposed for rural or remote locations where a supervisor works in a different organization or location. Both the Provisional licensee and their supervisor must explain how the supervision will be effective.
Do I have to practise if I have a provisional license?
There is no requirement for Provisional licensees to be employed. However, the Provisional licensure class is designed to help professionals start working sooner. If you do not intend to practise until you are eligible for Full licensure, you do not need to apply for a Provisional licence.
In some cases, the provincial regulator must determine eligibility for the entry-to-practice exam, and sometimes eligibility requires licensure. The Licensure team will clarify requirements for individuals in those scenarios.
I want to hire a Provisional licensee, but how can I hire them before they are licensed?
The College doesn’t determine HR policies in other organizations, but employment offers could be made (and Supervision Agreements signed) pending licensure. We can consider applications that include employment that is future-dated.
