September 30, 2024 will mark Canada’s 11th annual Orange Shirt Day and 4th National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The College of Health and Care Professionals of BC (CHCPBC) will honour the day by reflecting on the College’s commitment to Indigenous cultural safety, humility, anti-racism, reconciliation, and decolonization.
CHCPBC’s commitment
CHCPBC remains accountable to the 2017 Declaration of Commitment signed by all health regulatory colleges and is committed to integrating cultural safety and humility into the regulation of health profession services in BC, and to decolonizing our culture, governance, and operations.
The CHCPBC Cultural Safety, Humility, and Anti-Racism standard of practice was launched on September 30, 2022, by CHCPBC’s seven legacy colleges, along with four other BC health profession regulatory colleges.
The College’s first webinar, on September 23, 2024, offered all registrants the opportunity to hear family physician Dr. Rebekah Eatmon and physical therapist Robin Roots share their experiences working as health care providers in remote First Nation communities.
Honouring September 30
In observance of the federal and provincial statutory holiday, CHCPBC’s Vancouver and Victoria offices will be closed on September 30. The College is encouraging CHCPBC staff to learn more that day about cultural practices of BC’s First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Peoples as a step toward reconciliation.
